Localizada a 247 kilómetros de Punta Arenas, a 256 kilómetros de Río Gallegos (Argentina) y 362 kilómetros de Calafate (Argentina). Esta ciudad es la puerta de ingreso a hermosos paisajes naturales tales como ; Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, Monumento Natural Cueva del Milodón y Parque Nacional Los Glaciares (Argentina) entre otros.

Durante el invierno es posible llegar en menos de una hora a las canchas de esquí en Río Turbio (Argentina) y por mar a los glaciares Balmaceda y Serrano y a los hermosos glaciares del Canal de las Montañas. Puerto Natales esta a orillas del Canal Señoret donde fluyen las aguas del golfo Almirante Montt y del fiordo Ultima Esperanza.

Located 247 kilometers from Punta Arenas, 256 kilometers from Rio Gallegos (Argentina) and 362 kilometers from Calafate (Argentina). This city is the access door to beautiful natural landscapes such as Torres del Paine National Park, Milodon Cave Natural Monument and The Glaciers National Park (Argentina) among others.

In winter time, it is possible to get to the ski slopes of Rio Turbio in less than an hour (Argentina), and through the sea to Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers, and also the amazing glaciers of the Canal de las Montañas.

COMUNA PUNTA ARENAS País: Chile Región: Magallanes y Antártica Chilena Provincia: Magallanes Centro urbano situado a orillas del Estrecho de Magallanes, en la península de Brunswick, a 53º 08’ grados latitud sur y 70º 55’ grados longitud oeste. Punta Arenas es la capital de la región de Magallanes y a su vez capital de la Patagonia chilena, llamada antiguamente Punta Arenosa y “Sandy Point” por John Byron (en inglés), durante su recorrido por este pequeño y lejano paraje en el siglo XVII . La ciudad fue fundada en 1848, y se convirtió en el principal eje del desarrollo comercial, cultural y social de todo el territorio magallánico. Aquí puede realizar excursiones hacia los principales atractivos turísticos de la región. Los recursos son en su mayoría bellezas naturales que pueden ser visitadas por tierra, mar y aire. Existe una variada gama en la oferta de las agencias de viajes locales ya sean tours programados para grupos o servicios privados. Es posible recorrer gran parte de la región mediante los caminos visitando lugares como el Seno Otway, de gran atracción turística y científica, donde se ubica una colonia de pinguinos, o continuar por el camino hacia el sector de Río Verde y Seno Skyring ideal para los amantes de la pesca deportiva. Al recorrer los caminos regionales en general es posible observar una variada fauna, con aves como: el ñandú, el cóndor, el cisne y el flamenco. Magallanes es una zona rural de bellos paisajes que ofrece también agroturismo. Al sur de Punta Arenas la carretera baja el litoral central de la península de Brunswick en la ruta histórica por excelencia, por mar o por tierra pasaron alguna vez descubridores y conquistadores, indígenas, colonos y pioneros. La ruta actual conduce a sitios históricos como Fuerte Bulnes y Puerto del Hambre.

Río Gallegos ciudad capital de la provincia de Santa Cruz, Argentina; ubicada a orillas del Río del mismo nombre, en esta parte de la Patagonia con similar Paisaje de ciudades vecinas de amplias Pampas de clima frío y seco, donde el viento es un fiel acompañante, de temperaturas bajo cero en invierno, pero en verano con agradables temperaturas.

Rio Gallegos is the capital city of the Province of Santa Cruz, Argentina; located on the riverside of the Gallegos River, having in this part of the Patagonia similar landscapes of the neighbor cities, huge pampas, cold and dry weather where the wind is a faithful companion, with temperatures under zero in winter and nice weather in summer.

El Calafate is one of the three more important cities of the Province of Santa Cruz, access to The Glaciers National Park, located 80 km from Perito Moreno Glacier at the foothill of Calafate Mount and settled on Redonda Bay.

Habitada en sus comienzos por los Aonikenk y actualmente una pintoresca ciudad que ofrece todos los servicios que un visitante puede requerir y lo mejor es que está rodeada de un magnífico entorno Natural.

ALFREDO SOTO ORTEGA EDUCADOR OUTDOORS Mientras Permanecía en la Isla Rey Jorge en el grupo de las Shetland del Sur, esperando el transporte marítimo, en esta ocasión al Rompehielos “Oscar Viel” de la Armada de Chile, que me cruzara por el Estrecho de Bransfield que separa este grupo de Islas Subantarticas con la Península Antártica. El contexto de mi viaje, la sexta vez en este continente era apoyar con mi experiencia y asistir en la prevención y la seguridad del desplazamiento en glaciares, al grupo de investigadores de la Universidad de Magallanes, específicamente al staff de la Dirección de Programas Antárticos de la Universidad de Magallanes de la cual también formo parte. Mi estadía en la Base Antártica “Eduardo Frei Mon-

A pesar de los posibles retrasos en las actividades que podían ocasionar esta obligada permanencia en la Isla Rey Jorge, también la consideraba una gran oportunidad de permitirme conocer aún más el sector. Coincide extraordinariamente el ingreso de una masa de aire cálido y con altas presiones lo que me entusiasmo para hacer una minuciosa revisión a cartas geográficas de la isla y buscar algo interesante de las características propias de esta Isla. Este grupo de Islas de formación volcánica y cargada de tefra volcánica procedente de la última erupción de la Caldera de la Isla Decepción en 1967, está conformada por siete islas principales, con algunos islotes mas pequeños en su radio, distribuidas linealmente de Norte a Sur, Isla Rey Jorge, Isla Nelson, Isla Robert, Isla Greenwich, Isla Livingston e Isla Decepción.

taba a la línea y dirección para alcanzar la cabecera Sur del Glaciar Collins, principal casquete helado que cubre gran parte de la Isla Rey Jorge. Iniciamos nuestra aproximación tomando dirección hacia la Base Rusa “Bellinghausen” para luego dirigirnos a la maravillosa construcción y típica figura en lo alto de un cerro de la Capilla Ortodoxa que fue construida totalmente con madera traída desde Siberia. Bordeamos una primera laguna en un suelo bastante inestable poco firme del cual más de una vez nos embarrábamos casi completamente en el calzado que

Conforme me fui adaptando a mis espacios, en el refugio que queda inmediatamente en el aeródromo “Teniente Marsh”, debíamos en conjunto con los investigadores y los alumnos trasladarnos unos dos kilómetros para recibir nuestras raciones alimenticias en horarios preestablecidos entre el desayuno, almuerzo y cena, deliciosos y abundantes platos degustábamos en esos horarios. usábamos, preferí orientar a los alumnos por una saliente más elevada asegurando que estuviera más seca. De allí inmediatamente llegábamos a la base del Cerro y comenzaba nuestra ascensión en un acarreo bastante firme, el tiempo era inestable sin mucho viento pero el que había hacia bajar mucho la temperatura de la sensación térmica (-8º), la indicación era mantener un ritmo adecuado para preservar la temperatura corporal y no nos sintamos incomodos con el frío que se hace notar cuando el Sol está oculto detrás de las nubes. A los pocos metros ya la vista era esplendida hacia nuestras espaldas iba creciendo la imagen en su totalidad de la Villa Las Estrellas y las demás instalaciones extranjeras. Enfrentamos justo debajo de la cumbre una pequeña rampla de nieve y antes de llegar a la cumbre invito a mis alumnos a dirigirnos previamente a un Peñón o saliente que tenia el Cerro hacia el Oeste. Mis fieles compañeros Macarena Araya, Ingeniera Química recientemente titulada y con la fortuna de asistir a esta expedición y que en conjunto con el Alumno Carlos Cárdenas Cárdenas hacían firme dupla para reunir las suficientes muestras de microalgas que les favorezcan sus estudios de Biocombustible a partir de las Microalgas, le seguía Carlos Lecaros, estudiante de Ingeniería Electrica, quien acompañaba a los demás investigadores fundamentalmente apoyando las labores de redioecosondaje en las cercanías de la Base O’Higgins, específicamente en el Plateu principal del Glaciar Infantería y asi detectar su máximo peligro: Las Grietas.

Desde la principal elevación del Peñón, podíamos ver en toda su magnitud hacia el Oeste la grandeza del Mar de Drake, adornando en la línea costera de la Isla una treintena de pequeñas elevaciones sumergidas y golpeadas con violencia en sus paredes por enormes olas, uno que otro iceberg a la distancia que hacían percibir una danza geológica de estas imágenes combinadas de agua, roca y hielo. Retomamos nuestras huellas para dirigirnos a la cumbre del Cerro San Francisco, estando allí sin mayor problema que la preocupación que desde el Mar de Drake se veían nubes amenazantes que nos podían traer problemas, en Antártica los cambios son muy bruscos y lo que fue una tarde de tenue Sol de verano en un violenta tormenta de nieve que implique en pocos minutos poca o casi nada de visibilidad. Frente a esta situación nos contactamos por Radio a quienes solicitamos la autorización de nuestra excursión, indicando que intentaríamos llegar hasta el Glaciar Collins y en caso de precipitar y que impida la visibilidad

nos retornaríamos. Quienes resguardan todas las actividades fuera del perímetro de la Base Frei, nos orientan en que en caso de cualquier dificultad nos ditijamos a la Base Cientifica Antártica Uruguaya “Artigas” y que de ahí podíamos tomar el camino marcado de vuelta hacia la Base. Proseguimos nuestra caminata descendiendo por la cara Norte del Cerro San Francisco hacia el Glaciar Collins al que calculamos llegar en unos 40 minutos, entre variados pasos de lagunas y siempre acompañados por la presencia de los “Skuas” y algunos gaviotines que se internaban en la Isla en sus frecuentes cruces de costa a costa de la isla, esto denotaba que era el corredor natural de estas aves para ir de un lado a otro de la Isla. En nuestro tránsito de pronto somos sorprendidos y cae una copiosa nevazón sin preocuparnos mayormente, todos somos de la Región de Magallanes y para nosotros no es desconocida una presencia de nieve, casi en forma espontánea nos reunimos formando un grupo más compacto de tal manera de no perder visibilidad entre nosotros mismos. De pronto llegamos a un Valle que desde lo alto se veía no muy seguro para descender por lo tanto una instrucción rápida de Técnicas de Marcha en descenso y fijando la atención en donde colocar los pies. Nos internamos en el Valle el que era alocadamente inundado por ríos proveniente del Glaciar Collins, nos obligó a buscar la mejor pasada, aunque mojando nuestros equipos, continuamos internándonos ya en la Morrena del Glaciar, al mismo tiempo nos percatábamos de huellas de vehículos motorizados con orugas que dejaban sus marcas permanentes en este suelo tan frágil que da pena como se marchita la poca vegetación que logra sobrevivir a tales condiciones. Una morrena en caos que cubre indistintamente el rigor del hielo, haciendo de estos espacios muy inestables en constante movimiento aplicados por el rigor de la humedad existente en el verano. Con un poco de dificultad salvamos la morrena frontal y nos internamos al Glaciar Collins y mientras eso sucedía nuevamente y con mayor intensidad comenzaba a nevar copiosamente. Nos obliga a suspender nuestra intención de alcanzar en el interior del Glaciar un afloramiento rocoso que nos daría en otras condiciones una vista magnifica del sector. Rápidamente nos devolvemos y sentimos el llamado radial de la Base Frei ya preocupados que la nevada se hacia mas intensa. Afortunadamente nuestra respuesta fue que estábamos bien y que ya nos econtrabamos de regreso pasando por la Base Uruguaya “Artigas” y que en una hora ya estaríamos llegando a la Base Frei.

THE PATH OF THE SKUAS PROFESSOR ALFREDO SOTO OUTDOORS EDUCATOR

As I was staying at Rey Jorge Island, part of the South Shetland Islands, waiting for sea transport, this time the ice-breaker “Oscar Viel” of the Chilean Navy to take me through the Bransfield Strait that separates the sub Antarctic islands from the Antarctic peninsula.

The objective of my sixth trip to this continent was to support with my experience and help in the prevention and safety of the movement in glaciers to the group of investigators of the University of Magallanes, specifically, to the staff of the Direction of Antarctic Program, who I also belong to.

My stay at the Antarctic Base Eduardo Frei Montalva administrated by the Chilean Air Force was out of the schedule and I should probably have to wait six or seven days to have the chance to cross. In other opportunity, after leaving the Hercules that brought us from Punta Arenas, we had to wait only a

couple of hours and then, we immediately boarded and went far from the island to access to the polar world of the Chilean Antarctic Territory.

Besides the possible delays in the activities that could cause this stay at Rey Jorge Island, I also considered this a good chance to know the area much better. By coincidence, there was a warm air mass with high pressures coming, so I got excited to make an accurate check of the geographic charts of the island and look for something interesting about the proper features of this island. This archipelago of volcanic formation and full of volcanic tephra coming from the last eruption of the caldera of Deception Island in 1967, is made by seven main islands, with some small islands around, distributed in a line from north to south: Rey Jorge, Nelson, Robert, Greenwich, Livingston and Deception Islands.

SAN FRANCISCO MOUNT GLACIER COLLINS As I became used to my spaces in the refuge which is at Teniente Marsh Airport, we together with the investigators and the students should move a couple of kilometres to get our food portions in a pre-established time among breakfast, lunch and dinner when we enjoyed of delicious and abundant dishes. The first look was to an elevation at the other side of the landing strip, the San Francisco Mount, this was in line and direction to reach the south part of Glacier Collins, the main cold ice-cap covering a big area of Rey Jorge Island. We started our approach in direction of the Russian Base “Bellingshausen” and then to the wonderful typical construction of the Orthodox Chapel at the top of a hill, totally built with timber brought from Siberia. We went around a lake over a soil that was very unstable and smooth, where more than once

we got a lot of mud in our shoes, so I chose to take the students to a higher and drier area. From there, we immediately reached the mount and started our rise in a very strong sediment. The weather was unstable, no much wind but with a very low thermal feeling (-8ºC). The instruction was to keep an adequate rhythm to keep the body temperature, so we didn’t feel uncomfortable with the cold, showing up when the sun is hidden behind the clouds.

After a while, the view was splendid behind us and the image of Villa Las Estrellas and the other foreign facilities was growing.

Just under the peak, we faced a small snow mount and before reaching the top, I invited my students to go to a crag of the hill to the West. My faithful companions Macarena Araya, Chemical Engineer just titled, together with the student Carlos Cardenas Cardenas, made a strong couple to collect enough samples of

From the main elevation of the crag, we could see to the west the magnificence of the Drake Sea, decorating in the coast line of the island, about thirty small elevations submerged and hit with violence in its huge walls by waves, a couple of icebergs at the distance which seemed to be a geological dense of these combined images of water, rock, and ice. We returned to our way to go to the top of San Francisco Mount. When we were there, the only worry was the image of threatening clouds coming from the Drake Sea that could bring us problems. In Antarctica, there are other sudden changes and what was a gentle sunny summer day became a violent snow storm living you with low or almost nothing of visibility. Facing this situation, we may contact by radio with those who authorized us for this excursion, indicating that we would try to get to the Glacier Collins and if it started to rain, avoiding visibility, we would go back.

The guardians of all activities out of the perimeter of Base Frei, tell us that in case of any problem, we go to the Uruguayan Scientific Antarctic Base “Artigas” and from there we could take marked way back to the Base. We went on going down on the north face of the San Francisco Mount, to the Glacier Collins, to get there in about 40 minutes. Among diverse lakes and always followed by the presence of the skuas and some small seagulls flying inner the island in its frequent trips from coast to coast this indicated that it was the natural corridor of these birds to go from one side to the island to the other. Suddenly, in our transit we were surprised by an abundant snow. As we are all from the Region of Magallanes and snow is familiar to us, spontaneously we gathered making a whole group so as not to lose the visibility among us. Then, we got to a valley which seemed to be not too safe to go down, so I

gave a quick instruction about Walking Techniques with special attention about where to put the feet on. We went into the valley which was flooded by the rivers coming from Glacier Collins, it made as to look for the best passage, no matter we wet our suits.

We went on the moraine of the Glacier and at the same time we saw some paths of cat trucks leaving its permanent marks in these so fragile soil. It is a pity to see how just a few surviving vegetation gets dried in such conditions. A moraine in chaos covering the severity of the ice, making these spaces very unstable and in a constant movement due to the existing humidity of the summer.

Having some problems, we passed the front moraine and got into the Glacier Collins, and it started to snow again. Our intention to reach the inner part of the Glacier was suspended by a rocky area which would provide a great view under other conditions. We returned quickly and got a radio call from Base Frei already worried because the snow was very hard. Fortunately an answer was to tell them than we were ok and going back through the Uruguayan Base Artigas to get to Base Frei in an hour.

Un recorrido que no puede faltar en su visita a la ciudad de Punta Arenas es Parque Rey Don Felipe, también conocida como puerto del Hambre, nombre alusivo a las penurias sufridas por los primeros expedicionarios que llegaron hasta estas tierras.

En las cercanías del lugar podemos encontrar El Parque histórico y natural Fuerte Bulnes. Antigua fortificación construida en 1842, en el gobierno del presidente Manuel Bulnes, quien tomo posesión del lugar para asegurar la soberanía chilena sobre estas tierras, es cuando luego de 4 meses de navegación desembarca en la Punta Santa Ana la Goleta Ancúd, con un contingente militar, herramientas, alimentos , materiales de construcción, animales para la subsistencia en estas inhóspitas tierras, es aquí donde nace el primer asentamiento en la zona Fuerte Bulnes.

Fue destruido a los pocos años, quedando el lugar en estado de abandono. Para el centenario de su fundación, fue reconstruido, siendo reinaugurado como museo de sitio en el año 1943.

Actualmente el lugar existen réplicas del Fuerte, también una serie de servicios que harán de su estadía un grato momento.

REY DON FELIPE PARK AND BULNES FORTRESS You cannot miss a tour in your visit to Punta Arenas, this is Rey Don Felipe Park, also known as Hunger Port, name related to all the scarcities suffered by the first adventurers who arrived to these lands.

Close to this place, we may find the historical and natural park Bulnes Fortress. This is an old fortress built in 1842, in the government of President Manuel Bulnes, who took possession of the place to assure the Chilean sovereignty over this land. After 4 months of sailing, in Punta Ana Cove, the Schooner Ancud disembarked with a group of soldiers, tools, food, construction materials and animals for the subsistence in these isolated lands, so here is the origin of the first settlement in the area of Fortress Bulnes.

This was destroyed few years later, leaving the place abandoned. After one hundred years of Its foundation, it was rebuilt and opened as an onsite museum in 1943.

Nowadays, there is a replica of the Fortress and a series of services which will provide you a nice time.

Mi principal Motivación fue conocer, descubrir nuevos lugares, nuevas culturas y también a mi misma.

Que es lo que más te gusta hacer cuando llegas a una ciudad?

Cuando llego a un lugar nuevo, diferentes cosas, por ejemplo: en Oceanía, salir a camina, recorrer las ciudades, ir a los parques y sacar muchas fotografías. En Asía de todas maneras encontrar el mejor lugar para comer …

Do you remember your first day of the journey?

I was a bit nervous, anxious due to all that was coming; I thought that all would be almost the same as I used to have, but in a different place or country, that I would have a job, a house, hobbies, etc., but I didn’t expect this was so different.

What was your main motivation to set out on this adventure?

My main motivation was to know and discover different new places, new cultures and also discover myself.

What is your favourite activity when arriving to a city?

When I arrive to a new place I like to do different things, for example: in Oceania, I went for a walk around the cities, went to the parks and take many, many pictures. In Asia, In any case, find the best place to eat…

Cuales han sido los lugares que más te han gustado?

Muchos lugares me han gustado, pero mi favorito sin duda en Queenstown en New Zelanda, es un pequeño pueblo, hermoso, a la orilla de un lago. Todo está a una distancia caminable con muchísimas cosas que hacer y lugares para ir de Fiesta. También me gusta mucho Melbourne en Australia; Chiang Mai, Pai y Koh Chang en Tailandia y mis últimos lugares favoritos son Bhagsu, Leh y Vashisht en Indía, en cualquiera de esos lugares podría vivir.

Para todos los que están pensando en comenzar una aventura, solo atrévanse y viajen libres, sin planes, abiertos a cualquier idea u oportunidad que les surja en el camino, viajen sin miedo, porque siempre todo fluye, si necesitas algo, siempre hay alguien cerca dispuesto a darte un techo o comida si lo necesitas y sobre todo a compartir un buen momento.

Te ha tocado comer algo extraño?

Comidas extrañas no he comido, ya que siendo vegetariana el campo culinario es muy reducido, pero sí he visto menús muy diferentes, What places you have liked the most?

I like many places but Queenstown in New Zeland is my favourite; it’s a beautiful small town next to a lake. Everything Is at hand In a walking distance, there are many things to do and also many places to have fun. I also like very much Melbourne in Australia; Chiang Mai, Pai and Koh Chang in Thailand; and my last favourite places are Bhagsu, Leh and Vashisht in India, I could live in any of those places.

What has been the most difficult in your trips?

Fortunately, nothing at the moment; sometimes India tests your patience but only due to a so different culture.

I haven’t eaten strange food because I am vegetarian and there are so few things to eat in that field; however, I have seen very different options as food made with crickets in Cambodia; rats,

En un recipiente colocar las 2 cucharadas de Calafate, el azúcar y 1 cucharada de jugo de limón. Mezclar y moler el contenido hasta obtener un puré. En una coctelera colocar el pisco, una cucharada de jugo de limón, el puré de calafate y 4 cubos de hielo. Batir bien y verter en una copa a través de un colador. Y listo para disfrutar.

Los flamencos ven excepcionalmente bien, pero debido a la pequeñez de su cerebro que no siempre son capaces de interpretar lo que ven de manera eficiente. Esta es una de las razones por las que viven en grupos. Se apoyan unos a otros y trabajar con conciencia de grupo en lugar de la conciencia individual.

Las personas con este totem se sientan cómodos y seguros en grupos. Tienen dificultades para estar a solas. Ellos son los seguidores más que líderes. Los flamencos son aves fascinante, con un aspecto llamativo. Su color rosado se debe a la comida que comen, que contiene caroteno. Sin este alimento en su dieta sus plumas se vuelven blancas. Ellos nos enseñan a hacer lo mismo y no involucrarnos en situaciones que son perjudiciales para nosotros en cualquier nivel. Los flamencos se emparejan para toda la vida y son leales a sus parejas. Hacen la migración más larga que cualquier otra ave.

Las personas con este tótem están dedicados a sus decisiones, leal a sus causas y tienen una tendencia a llegar más lejos que la mayoría para lograr sus objetivos.

LA DIOSA DE LA LAGUNA Era hermosa la diosa india del agua, que habitaba en su palacio de cristal de la Laguna amarga. Pero era una deidad cruel y egoísta, pues la única ofrenda que la volvía propicia era el primer amor de los mancebos. Se cuenta que un día vio llegar a la costa de la laguna, que era entonces de agua dulce un príncipe indio malherido en la guerra. Tristemente le sonrió a la diosa, lamentando el no poder sobrevivir para admirar su hermosura. Ella quedó sorprendida, como sacudida por un rayo cósmico, por vez primera el embeleso del amor conmovió su alma. Pero pronto sucumbió a la desesperación el comprender el destino de su amado. El cristalino espejo de agua se convulsionó. Un trueno, como un largo lamento, estremeció el cielo y las nubes lloraron con su diosa. La Laguna se convirtió en una furiosa tormenta y caos durante un día y una noche. Al amanecer, el joven se encontró en la playa. Sus heridas habían cicatrizado y al abrir los ojos, vio la increíble transformación que le había concedido la naturaleza.

La playa era blanca y las aguas se habían vuelto turbias y saladas. Atónito el joven, como en niebla raspada por un tenue rayo de sol, recordó a la hermosa mujer que la acariciaba cuando se le iban cerrando los ojos. Ahora se sentía sano y sus nervios tensos estaban sedientos de algo. Comenzó a avanzar por el agua, alejándose cada vez más de la costa, como si un imperativo lo impulsara. Cuando el agua cubrió su cintura comenzó a nadar. A nadar?... No nadaba, flotaba simplemente. Era como si unos brazos femeninos, con dulzura, penetrándole por la piel bronceada, le acariciaban el alma. Y siguió nadando, hasta que un tenue rayo rosado del amanecer lo fue transformando en el grácil flamante flamenco rosado que hasta los días de hoy en cada primavera y verano va tiñendo la Laguna Amarga de un rosado curioso ante la inmensidad de las montañas convirtiéndose en un guardián eterno del amor de la diosa de la Laguna.

Desde entonces las aguas de la Laguna Amarga son curativas más bien dicho amorosamente curativas.

KAPENKE EL FLAMENCO Annon, el armadillo, fue el encargado de citar al flamenco para participar de la reunión de la laguna, pero mientras se dirigía hacia allá, vio a un gigante escondido detrás de unas rocas y tuvo miedo. Para que éste no se diera cuenta de lo que estaba ocurriendo y temeroso de que le hiciese preguntas, comenzó a husmear la tierra buscando raíces y poco a poco se fue alejando entre los coirones, hasta llegar a la morada del flamenco que en ese entonces no lucía los hermosos colores con que hoy lo vemos.

Apenas enterado de la noticia, el flamenco, alzó presuroso el vuelo y llegó a la hora del amanecer donde ya el cisne había ocupado su lugar, teniendo a Elal niño sobre su espalda. Esto llenó de tristeza y fue tal su pena, que el niño tuvo compasión y en premio a su nobleza le dio el color de la aurora que ya comenzaba a despuntar. Aun así, Kapenke parece vivir siempre apenado y permanece en actitud solitaria y melancólica en las lagunas patagónicas.

The word flamingo comes from the Latin “llama”. The Egyptians venerated the flamingo as a living incarnation of the God of Sun: Ra. The flamingo is a bird with many faces. They live in big groups and rarely alone. To live in groups provides them a feeling of safety and protection. Due that the eye of the flamingo is in fact bigger than its brain, they are associated with clairvoyance. Flamingoes see exceptionally well, but due to its small brain, they are not always able to interpret what they see efficiently. This is one of the reasons why they live in groups.

They support one each other and work as a group instead of individually.

People with this totem feel comfortable and safe in groups.

They have trouble to be alone. They are more followers than leaders. Flamingoes are fascinating birds with a flashy color.

Its pink color is due to the food they eat, which has carotene.

Without this element in its food, feathers become white. The pink is associated to the heart chakra, and the pink color in flamingoes is linked with the heart and emotional energies.

The flamingo as a totem teaches the importance of balance.

It may teach us how to filter the things of life, to dismiss those that are not beneficial and keep those that help us. When the flamingo appears, may be it is because we need to be in touch with its emotional being. The flamingo is an extravagant and vibrating totem that offers happiness and love. The flamingo teaches us not to be afraid to show our emotions. Flamingoes have a long life. They are sociable birds but extremely sensible to loud noises and facing chaotic situations, they will immediately run away. They teach us to do the same and not to get involved in harmful situations at any level. Flamingoes get a couple for the whole life and are very loyal. They make the longest migration of all birds. People with this totem are dedicated to their own decisions, loyal to their causes and have a tendency to go farther than most of the people to get their objectives.

THE GODESS OF THE LAKE The beautiful native goddess of water lived in her crystal-made palace of Amarga Lake. However, she was a cruel and selfish divinity, since the only gift making her favored was the first love of the youths. It is said that one day, she saw someone to come to the coast of the lake; in that time the water of the lake was sweet, he was a prince badly injured by the war. The goddess smiled to him sadly, being sorry because he could not survive to admire her beauty. She became surprised, as shook by a cosmic lightning; for first time the enchantment of love touched her soul. But, she soon gave into desperation when understood her love destiny. The translucent water mirror got convulsed. A thunder as a long cry shook the sky and the clouds cried with its goddess. The lake became a furious storm and chaos during one day and one night. At the dawn, the young man was on the beach. His wounds had healed and when he opened his eyes, he saw the incredible transformation that nature gave him.

The beach was white and water had become turbid and salty. The young man was astonished and as a mist scraped by a faint sunray, he remembered the beautiful woman who caressed him when he was closing his eyes. Now he felt healthy and his tense nerves were thirsty of something. He started to go through the water, getting far from the coast, as if a command motivated him. When water covered his waist, he started to swim.. Swim?....He didn’t swim, he simply floated. It was like some female arms, sweetly and penetrating his tanned skin, caressed his soul. And he continued swimming until a faint pink ray of the dawn was transforming him in the graceful, great-looking pink flamingo that nowadays each spring and summer, dyes Amarga Lake of a curious pink in the presence of the immensity of the mountains becoming an eternal guardian of the love of The Goddess of The Lake.

Since then, waters of Amarga Lake are healing, better said, lovely healing.

KAPENKE, THE FLAMINGO Annon, the armadillo was in charge to call the flamingo to participate of the meeting of the lake. While it was going there, it saw a giant hidden behind the rocks and it fell afraid. So, to avoid the giant’s attention and afraid of his questions, it started to look in the soil to find roots. Step by step, it got far among the thatches to get to the house of the flamingo, that then it didn’t look the beautiful colours than it looks today.

As soon as the flamingo knew the news, it flew quickly and arrived at the dawn, but the swan had already taken its place having Elal, the boy on its back. This was so sad, that the boy had compassion and to prize its nobility he gave it the colour of the aurora that started to appear. Even so, Kapenke seems always to be sad and stay lonely and melancholic in the Patagonian lakes.

Pero en último término, hoy por hoy, frente a la comodidad de leer desde un kindle o una tablet por ejemplo, ¿cuál es la gracia de leer un libro impreso?, y con ello cargar varios gramos más de peso por unidad, vérselas con hojas que se deterioran y vuelven amarillen¿DIGITAL O ANALÓGICO?: tas con el tiempo, polvo que se acumula en PARA LEER MÁS ACÁ sus intersticios. Así lo hacen suponer investigaciones divulgadas que apuntan al cómo leemos, incidiendo en aspectos cognitivos y emocionales, es decir cuánto comprendemos y sentimos respecto de lo que leemos. El “round” lo ganaría por puntos y en fallo dividido, la lectura en papel.

Consequently, the extension and cost of the diverse electronic devices is lower every day; this makes us to be used to the absolute interconnection among children, young people and adults to be connected “all the time “playing down the differences among

“natives” and immigrants” in the universe of the information.

As a consequence, Reading has also experienced substantial changes. And even better, if that was read by others, accumulating paths, marks and deterioration which make it more valuable, providing us a dense storyline of signs superimposing other stories to the original text, bringing us desires and confidences that connect us with other human beings who went through this same story with their own and different opinions. In that point is where analogical reading has no competence.

DESAFÍO ÚLTIMA ESPERANZA 2014

En la Octava Maravilla del Mundo, este 26 de octubre del 2014, se realizara la 4˚ versión de la carrera de Mountainbike modalidad XCM (Maratón Cross-Country) la cual tendrá una distancia de aproximadamente 90 km de recorrido rodeado de un majestuoso paisaje, partiendo en el sector de Río Serrano en el Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, y finalizando en el VELODROMO de Puerto Natales.

Entre los lugares que recorrerán los competidores se encuentra; Cordillera Paine, con vista a los Cuernos del Paine, Rio Serrano, Lago Toro, Lago Porteño, Laguna Sofía., Vista Cueva del Milodón, Fiordo Eberhard, Puerto Consuelo, Puerto Bories, Costanera de Puerto Natales con vista al Monte Balmaceda.

La premiación del evento se realizará este mismo día a las 16:00 hrs. en la cual se entregará una medalla Finisher a todos los competidores que logren cruzar la meta. Desde ya deseamos mucha suerte a todos los competidores que visitaran esta hermosa tierra y que tengan una buena estadía en la Patagonia y una gran carrera.

In the VIII World Wonder, this October 26th, 2014, we will have the 4th version of the mountain bike race category XCM (Cross-Country Marathon) which will cover a distance of approximately 90 kms. of a route surrounded by a magnificent scenery. Starting in Rio Serrano area in Torres del Paine National Park and ending in the cycle-track of Puerto Natales. Some of the places included in the race are Cordillera Paine, with a view of the Cuernos del Paine, Serrano River, Toro Lake, Porteño Lake, Sofia Lagoon, Milodon Cave, Eberhard Fjord, Consuelo Dock, Bories Dock, Seaside in Puerto Natales with a view of the Balmaceda Mount.

The award ceremony of the event will be the same day at 4 pm. We will give a Finisher medal to all the competitors who reach the goal. Since now, we wish good luck to all competitors who will visit this beautiful land and have a nice stay in Patagonia and a great race.
